This is an opportunity under the Internship Program component of the Pathways Programs. The Internship Program provides students enrolled in high schools, colleges, trade schools and other qualifying educational institutions with paid opportunities to work in agencies and explore Federal careers while completing their education. Veteran's Preference will be applied in filling positions under the Pathways Programs.

Eligible students must be enrolled at least half-time in an accredited academic institution and maintain a 2.5 GPA or higher.

  • Students can be hired for Internship positions at any time during the year.

  • Students typically work part-time during the school year and full-time during the summer, winter, and spring vacations.

  • Students will be on indefinite appointments during their period of eligibility under the Internship Program.

  • Interns will be required to sign an agreement that outlines the parameters of the Internship Program during employment with NSF.

  • The Internship Program allows students an opportunity to be converted non-competitively to a career-conditional or term position once the student completes all requirements of the Internship Program.

  • Noncompetitive conversion to a permanent or term position is not guaranteed. The Intern’s eligibility for conversion does not guarantee that the agency will opt for conversion.

Responsibilities

As a Student Trainee in the Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) the incumbent will:

Analysis, programming and maintenance tasks, and researching complex administrative systems.

Assist the Office and Division staff in making effective use of applications software.

Assist in setting up and troubleshooting computers, printers and laptops; setting up virtual panels, workshops and conferences.

Assist in the design, development, implementation, and/or maintenance of information management systems.

Assist in the design, coding and testing of new software; and maintains assigned databases and provides pertinent reports.

Make application program modifications; prepares routine computer-generated reports, analyses and graphs.

Develops and manages information dissemination on the Web.

Qualifications

To qualify for the GS-9, you need to have one of the following: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 level in the Federal service. Examples of such experience include: utilizing computer requirements for project assignments consisting of several related tasks, making minor modifications to system parts. Assignments required analysis of interrelationships of system components, planning the sequence of actions to accomplish assignment, and personal responsibility for at least a segment of the overall project. ORHave a Master's or equivalent graduate degree. ORTwo (2) full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Master`s or equivalent graduate degree. ORHave a combination of post high school education and experience that, combined, meet the qualification requirements for this position.

To qualify for the GS-11, you need to have one of the following: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-9 level in the Federal service. Examples of such experience include: as experience that demonstrates the knowledge and ability to use IT systems, conduct data analyses, provide customer support, recommend systems modifications, analyze interrelationships of system components, and plan sequences of actions to accomplish assignments. ORI have a Ph.D. or equivalent graduate degree. ORTwo (2) full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., with a major study in computer science, information science, information systems management, or course work that required the development or adaptation of computer programs and systems and provided knowledge equivalent to a major in the computer field. ORHave a combination of graduate level education as described above; beyond the two full years of graduate level education and specialized experience as described above that together meet the qualification requirements for this position.

How You Will Be Evaluated

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Applicant qualifications will be assessed based on the level of completed education and relevant work experience at the closing date of the announcement.
