General summary/purpose:

Communications Specialist assists Communications Manager in planning, developing and executing Jhpiego’s social media strategy in support of the department’s overall communications strategy and fundraising goals. This includes monitoring social media trends and analytics to ensure wide engagement and coverage and assisting in developing content such as blogs and develop and implement online fundraising campaigns. Communications Specialist will also assist in producing short multimedia products for use on social media and also will assist in publicizing conferences, events and fundraisers and interface with other Jhpiego departments to help promote business development and institutional needs. Specialist position is an integral part of a growing communications team that promotes and markets the organization’s mission, technical leadership, programs and activities around the world via corporate website, social media and other non-traditional communication outlets.

Specific duties & responsibilities:

  • Take leading role alongside Communications Manager-Digital Media in strategizing and implementing concepts to grow social audience, boost online traffic and meet development goals

  • Collect and analyze social media engagement data for reporting and recommendations

  • Write and edit daily content for Jhpiego social media accounts including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and all others as needed

  • Manage small-dollar paid advertising campaigns to maximize digital engagement and impact

  • Plan social media coverage for Jhpiego-supported conferences and events with relevant staff

  • Engage with key peer and partner organizations on digital and live events to ensure Jhpiego has a voice in collaborative, high-visibility multimedia conversations

  • Build capacity of Jhpiego staff to contribute to and participate on social media

  • Maintain social media accounts of the CEO and other senior leadership as needed

  • Prepare online fundraising campaigns and advertisements to support development efforts including fundraising and lead generation

  • Manage overall social media calendar to support external relations, development, technical and program areas and all other communications efforts

  • Coordinate and produce podcasts and host Facebook Live segments to promote Jhpiego’s technical experts and global field staff

  • Stay up to date on evolving best practices and ensure goals are met in changing digital environment

  • Use departmental project management software to engage colleagues in collaborative work

  • Prepare images, graphics, videos, image galleries and other multimedia elements using Adobe Creative Cloud products such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere and/or Spark

  • Identify new channels for innovative dissemination and promotion of project materials, experts, events, products

  • Work with overseas and program staff to develop content for social media and the organization’s monthly newsletter

  • Track and analyze media coverage and provide recommendations for improved engagement

  • Write media alerts, press releases and content for media packets

  • Prepare monthly communications for Jhpiego Alumni Network

  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum qualifications (mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s Degree in communications, marketing, or related field required.

  • 2 years’ relevant experience in communications, digital and social media or marketing required.

  • 3+ years of professional experience in communications, digital and social media, or marketing preferred.

  • Advanced degree may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

  • Managing social media account(s) for digital media, non-profit organization or marketing entity including organic and paid content

  • Creative, dynamic thinker with strong writing and editing skills, verbal communication and experience with Microsoft Office 365, Adobe Creative Suite Products and other graphic and digital content creation platforms.

  • Exceptional judgment and extreme attention to detail to participate regularly. independently and above reproach with minimal direction on multiple social platforms daily

  • Strong familiarity with Facebook and Twitter advertising platforms

  • Strong knowledge of principles of graphic design and ability to make graphics for social media

  • Familiarity with social management platforms like Sprout Social or Hootsuite

  • Experience understanding and acting strategically based on digital analytics

  • Familiarity with global health issues and non-profit organizations engaged in such work

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, while balancing competing priorities and tackling multiple assignments

  • Ability to be flexible, self-motivated and collaborative in order to deliver high quality work product in multiple communications mediums

Preferred qualifications:

  • Familiarity with Wordpress

  • Knowledge of video editing programs
