This part-time, temporary position performs science writer functions for NASA’s Spinoff Program Office on an as-needed basis. The candidate will receive assignments from Spinoff’s editor-in-chief and independently perform the necessary research and interviews to create written products. Other duties include editing written copy, corresponding with subject matter experts to the vet the accuracy of written content, gathering appropriate imagery for stories, and reporting to the editor-in-chief on the progress of each assignment.
Duties and Responsibilities
Writes spotlight-style feature articles on technologies and innovators, approximately 600-1,000 words in length each
Receives story assignments and pursues them by:
performing background research
interviewing subject matter experts
writing story drafts
oobtaining stakeholder approval of written content
gathering appropriate imagery and writing image captions
Interfaces directly with Spinoff editor-in-chief to receive assignments and report on progress
Independently manages multiple assignments and deadlines
Takes complex and sometimes technical information gathered from interviews and research and turns it into accessible, accurate prose
Uses common online collaboration tools such as Dropbox and Google Documents to keep project files organized and accessible
At least three years professional writing, particularly writing feature articles under tight deadlines.
A demonstrated track record of independently producing written products requiring interviews with subject matter experts, background research, and translating sometimes complex and/or technical information into compelling prose for a broad, lay audience.
Proficiency with Microsoft Word, including use of styles
Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in related area (English, journalism, communications, etc.) preferred.
