Global media relations and issues management lead

Bechtel, one of the most respected engineering, construction, and project-management companies in the world, is seeking a seasoned issues management and media relations professional to lead the company’s global corporate issues management and media relations functions. The successful candidate will work with a small team of Corporate Affairs peers and other senior managers to develop, execute, and measure a comprehensive, proactive media and issues management communications strategy for the company. Tier 1 media relationships and a strong knowledge of global corporate issues and crisis communications are prerequisites to this position. The position reports to Bechtel’s principal vice-president and manager, Corporate Affairs, and is based in Reston, Va.

Principal duties, media relations

  • Creating and executing a global media relations program

  • Managing corporate-level media and communications by:

  • working with senior management across all businesses and functions to develop, execute, and measure an integrated media and communications program;

  • defining key messages and providing strategic thought, vision and leadership on marketing communications;

  • managing the company’s relationships with external media relations firms, as required

  • serving as company spokesperson, as appropriate and required

  • Building and maintaining constructive relationships with key media representatives

  • Communicating about Bechtel to a variety of external audiences, including news and trade media as well as other stakeholders and key influencers

  • Pitching Bechtel news items and scheduling and preparing subject-matter experts for media interviews

  • Generating strategies and tactics to increase familiarity with Bechtel and support for its activities through all media channels including social and digital media.

  • Managing a media relations database and ensuring its continued development and use by communications professionals throughout the company

  • Providing ongoing analysis of media activities, trends and outcomes for use in decision making

Principal duties, issues management

  • Managing and executing proactive and predictive issues management by

  • researching and analyzing complex issues

  • being familiar with project risks and milestones

  • knowing company and customer requirements, and

  • having a thorough understanding of technical, legal, and other challenges that must be met to achieve successful outcomes in the design and construction of large-scale, highly complex projects

  • Preparing reports or other communications to help corporate management and Global Business Unit and project teams have a better understanding of how to address, mitigate, or respond to issues arising or to identify issues that may arise (i.e., “looking around corners”)

  • Sponsoring use of issues management tools to anticipate and manage significant, global issues, including preparation of risk assessments, mitigation strategies, messaging, and plans for internal and external communications

  • Sponsoring and managing issues tracking system, alerting senior global Corporate Affairs management of issues requiring timely responses, and working with global business units, media relations, the legal department, and other internal stakeholders in seeking to avoid or in responding to issues arising

  • Maintaining expertise in crisis and issues management disciplines

  • Managing team competency requirements for issues and crisis management

Position Requirements, Leadership Attributes

  • Strong track record of working with and collaborating on communications for senior executives and leaders, as well as the ability to collaborate with other team members and corporate functions to ensure alignment

  • Extensive experience in a senior corporate communications role with a proven track record in managing strategic media relations and issues management

  • Strong team leadership and engagement skills, with the ability to motivate and inspire team members in a matrix environment

  • Demonstrated ability to take complicated issues and create concise communications deliverables to effectively articulate the company's point of view

  • Expert research, analytical and strategic planning skills; able to balance short and long-term priorities and manage simultaneous projects

  • Effective project management skills; able to define project goals and deliverables and implement key programs on time and within budget

  • Global outlook and awareness of political, economic, and social issues

  • Ability to translate technical details into compelling and authentic stories that connect with various audiences

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work well in a team-based, matrix organization, across time zones and cultures, and within a community of communications and engineering and construction professionals

  • Excellent judgement; heightened sense of personal and corporate ethics

  • The ability to work effectively under deadlines and manage multiple projects simultaneously

Position Requirements, media relations and issues management

  • Demonstrated media relations expertise and media contacts/relationships

  • Demonstrated experience in managing issues and crisis communications at a corporate level in a global environment

  • Outstanding news judgment and awareness of media coverage of political, economic, technical and social issues and trends

  • Critical thinking skills and the ability to grasp complex matters quickly

  • Outstanding writing and editorial skills, as he/she will draft and edit carefully crafted press releases, statements, op-ed articles, speeches, letters to the editor, briefing materials and social media

  • Successful track record working in large, matrixed organizations

Position requirements, general

  • Excellent oral, written, and presentation skills; attention to detail; and ability to navigate ambiguous issues to create concise messaging and plans

  • Competent user of business software

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, political science, journalism or related field; 15 years’ experience in increasingly responsible roles in corporate communications; master’s degree in business or communications a plus

  • Excellent English-language skills – spoken and written; fluency in a second language a plus

Grade level will be commensurate with candidate’s professional training and experience
